What a timing chain does, and why it matters

The timing chain synchronises the rotation of the crankshaft and camshaft, ensuring the engine valves open and close at the correct time during combustion.

Unlike timing belts, timing chains are designed to last longer. However, they can still stretch, wear or fail, particularly on certain engine types or where oil servicing has been inconsistent. If a timing chain fails completely it can cause catastrophic engine damage, which is why early diagnosis and professional replacement is essential.

Signs you may need a timing chain replacement

• Rattling noise on cold start — a metallic rattle when starting can indicate chain stretch or tensioner wear
• Engine management light — a warning light may appear if the timing is out of sync
• Poor performance or misfires — incorrect valve timing reduces power and fuel efficiency
• Metal shavings in the oil — contaminated oil found during servicing can suggest internal wear
